Moreas Studios Have Gone Vertical!

Small time indie dev Moreas game studios has a few titles in their catalog. I've already played Space Elite Force, a horizontal shmup with some catchy tunes and satisfying action. There's a sequel SEF2, but between the two Elite Force titles is a vertical scrolling shooter, possibly a canonical title in the SEF series, though it doesn't share the namesake. Space War Infinity is the kind of shmup that's simple execution could have you mistaking it for a 90's arcade game, that is, if it weren't for the savegame, upgrades and 16/9 aspect ratio. The same hectic action takes place on the obligatory autoscrolling backdrop that has the occasional change of scenery along with some tougher enemies to blast. At the end of every section is a bossfight that immediately transitions to the next area, rinse and repeat for a high score. This is maybe to the detriment to the game's design, as it was hard to tell just when the final boss had been beaten, the game simply keeps trudging along in a sort of arcade style loop, allowing players to keep blasting to their hearts content. As far as simple vertical shmups go, Space War Infinite is a solid entry at the price point.

There's a sort of appeal to playing games from such a small indie developer, watching how the progress in terms of quality and design, it's the kind of story you can piece together from playing games in a sequential order and e-stalking the dev's storepage. I'm no doubt going to Space Elite Force 2, so there's a lot more in the horizontal shmup sub-genre to explore in the futre, until then, Comrades.
