The Minecraft Cave & Cliff Update Announced

I play some pretty open world games. Like 180 million other people, I know the perils of mining in the dark. I've been playing minecraft on-and-off so long that I have a dual Java and Bedrock Key. You could say I was into Minecraft before it was cool, though minecraft was always pretty cool. As great as Minecraft is now, it's about to get a whole lot deeper.

During the recent internet-breaking Minecon 2020 Event we all finally got news of the much anticipated Minecraft 1.17 "Caves & Cliffs" update. It was a breathtaking and exciting expo of features to come, and that's saying something for a game that was released back in 2009. So as a player that's been around the block a few times (pun intended) allow me to list the new features I'm most excited for in descending order, because I'm disorganized like that.

1. Creative caverns

I don't have a surprising opinion here. We've all been waiting for a cave update for Minecraft, now it's confirmed. There's the new stalagmite blocks, new cave gen,  a new ore, and some new mobs. From what the preview showed, it's going to revolutionize the way we play Minecraft, seriously, if caves are more enticing, then we'll be putting our bases down there for sure. Just imagine the suspended mining outposts and jungle-cave integrated hung from vines. It's all going to be a breath of fresh air into the otherwise dank caves we have now.

Bundles are going to be a new item that simply boosts inventory space, and I'm just as excited for them as the cave update itself. What this new bundle item will do is act as a portable storage chest for up to 64 items. This means storage difficulties will be a thing of the past. Currently my buildings all require stacking barrels floor-to-ceiling for a warehouse looking build only. The ability to store 64x64 cobblestone in one slot, means I can spend less time sorting, and more time exploring. While mining bundles are going to help alot too. things like coal, iron, cobble, all accumulate so quickly that it forces more trips to the surface to unload. Once again, more time to mine will change the dynamic of the game, though, with more items in your inventory, its going to be an even bigger loss if you fall into lava!

3. Archeology

Break out your paintbrushes and plaster, archeology is being added to Minecraft. Using a brush on certain blocks will slowly excavate them to expose ancient artifacts. The preview didn't allude to much other than some ancient pottery, but I have a suspicion that there's going to be some opportunity to find rare or enchanted items amongst the ancient debris, kind of like fishing. If Mojang doesn't add more than pottery it'd be alot of wasted potential, however the beauty of adding this system is that it can be expanded upon at any time, so it can only get better and better.

4. Dead man walkin' !

One of the new mobs showcased was the Warden, an absolute tank that can dole out an M1 Abrams level of damage to even an armored player. He's big, he's bad, and he's mostly blind, so sticking with stealth and playing ninja will keep you out of harms way. It's only a matter of time before the supposed boat-load of xp the Warden drops becomes too much to resist, so we'll be rigging some dynamite, anvils, and lava to dispatch of this near-sighted nightmare. And I still get killed by creepers, yeesh.

5. Copper!

Adding a new ore should be an exciting event. New blocks and a nifty looking telescope are welcome additions, but there's got to be more to the oxidizing ore than we're being shown here. Let's not forget that copper is used to make a huge range of consumer goods IRL. From wire to water, copper conducts and carries the goods where needed. That being said, I hope there's a lot more coming feature wise for this underrated material.

That's all I had to say. I'm genuinely excited for the state of Minecraft and keep playing whenever I'm too lazy to win other games. Sadly we're all waiting for mid 2021 to see this update go live, and that's if it's not delayed. Nevertheless, your boi Handick will be here posting all kinds of inane content to pass the time, after all, were in this together, Comrades!
