Dead Island: Let's get this party started!

Originally released by Deep Silver in 2011 Dead Island is B-movie inspired fps zombie smasher with rpg elements. The game is beautifully remastered in it's Definitive Edition release and runs smoothly on pc. Hack, slash, loot, and upgrade your way out of a tropical paradise turned zombie hellhole. The game really has a broad appeal, on sale its an absolute no-brainer (pun intended).

Nothing could possibly go wrong

Sadly the game begins with an island rap concert instead of a Jurassic Park inspired helicopter ride. The beginning cinematic introduces the four all-star team of zombie slayers, all available for multiplayer shenanigans. In single player you'll see them in cinematics, delivering their cheesy lines and furthering the plot, start to finish.

Everything goes wrong

I have no intention to replay the game, so I choose Logan Carter, the generalist character of the four. He has some decent upgrades and perks, that can be leveled-up in the typical rpg manner. Xp comes from killing foes and completing missions. Side-quests are a huge distraction, potentially doubling the length of the game, so I only did a few initially to boost my stats, later opting for story missions only.  No point in dawdling about, especially when Dead Island is an estimated 15+ hours already.

So hacking and slashing my way through hordes of zombies, only to learn the origins of the zombie virus could have been easily avoided, I soon find myself in the final area of the game. Deaths started racking up, combat became more annoying than fun and side-characters began complaining, the end was neigh.

Lets wrap this up!

A mad dash to the end secured a date with the final boss. Difficult but not impossible, I stand over another crumpled and perforated fps boss, babe in arm, gun in hand. With the zombie apocalypse temporarily abated, the gang helicopter rides off into the sunset , not unlike the ending scene in Jurassic Park, nice.

Time to YEET!

Dead Island is a great looking game, but became pretty repetitive towards the end, after all, I pretty much just spent the last 17 hours punching the dead back into their coffins. Dead Island has some really nice features and in principle is good, so I've joined the legion of people painfully waiting for Dead Island 2
Now on to more games, as I work on the never ending quest to empty my backlog of Steam games. Stay tuned for more PC gaming action, partner.
