Whether you're looking to enter the shmup genre, gaming on a budget, or both, Star Saviors is an affordable and feature rich title more than worth the money.
Out of sheer curiosity I bought Star Saviors on a Steam sale binge. This indie shoot 'em up cost me exactly a dollar on sale and piqued my interest. Featuring grandiose music, smooth gameplay, and indie charm. It raised a question I'm all too fond of asking; 'What am I getting for said dollar?'. Well, it turns out quite a bit of value. Finishing shmups is rare for me, and more so at this price. So let's pull up our space pants, dust off our joysticks and blast off into action!
It's a pc gaming tradition to first explore the settings. Here Saviors wins some brownie points with its vast array of settings. Obvious additions are sound, music, controls and v-sync, but I was pleasantly surprised to find frame-rate settings for the more hertz gifted monitors. Typically cabinet ported shooters will be locked at 60fps, but here Star Saviors gives players an edge with more frames per-second to react to the hectic battles.
Of the multiple game modes, I spent most of my time in the campaign. It's co-op compatible, features multiple pilots to choose and a robust upgrade system. These features kept me ahead of the curve for the twenty-two campaign missions and frequent bossfights. Player choice and different builds offer some replayablity, along with the scoring system. It helps that the game is about 6 hours long and saves your progress. If you still find yourself stuck, you can change the difficulty amidst the campaign to accommodate, unlike arcade titles that require a one-shot playthrough and god level skills.
Epic explosions and frantic action fill the screen from the start. Enemies and projectiles clutter the screen and make strafing runs over an auto-scrolling background. Every few missions are capped off with a boss fight and change of scenery. It will take your own combination of guns, bombs, and your special (limited ammo) weapon to dispatch the robot hordes whilst headbanging to what I can only describe as a symphonic metal soundtrack. Its action packed start to finish.
Be warned: switching between game modes can reset your story mode progress! This is one of the few faults I found with the title.
So my verdict: Star Saviors is worth the dollar, and a whole lot more, it deserves a place among the most awesome budget titles. Smooth controls, accommodating difficulty and enough explosions to satisfy any pc pyromaniac. Star Saviors is 5/5 handicks. Peace out, Comrades.
